Visit UTSA’s Institute of Texan Cultures from December 16, 2017 - March 11, 2018 and experience The Will to Adorn exhibit. The exhibit presents the discoveries of high school students who participated in the Smithsonian Center’s course on “African American Dress and the Aesthetics of Identity”. African American high school students documented the influence of the African American dress by visiting shops, African American braiding salons, and speaking with local experts. The Smithsonian commissioned the exhibit because the influence of African American dress and self-expression has not been the subject of formal research.
