The Civilian and Galveston Gazette


Established in Houston in June 1838, and edited by Hamilton Stuart, the Civilian & Galveston Gazettemoved to Galveston in 1839 where it promoted various causes--such as immigration to Texas--until 1886. Digitized articles in this section include advertisements for slaves, essays on sugar and cotton production, the passage of laws in Galveston restricting movement of African Americans, and the debate over annexation.
