Purchased Lives: The American Slave Trade from 1808 to 1865

Museum Exhibit or ProgramThe new temporary exhibit at the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum will be Purchased Lives: The American Slave Trade from 1808 to 1865. The exhibit will use first-person testimonies and more than 75 original artifacts to examine enslaved persons and their role in America’s pre-Civil War economy. The displays also include ship manifests, “Lost Friends” ads placed after the Civil War by newly freed people, and an interactive display with a database tracking more than 70,000 people to New Orleans from U.S. ports. Purchased Lives is on loan from The Historic New Orleans Collection and will be on view from February 11, 2017- July 9, 2017.
